Donnie (Don
III)
Donnie, like his dad and brothers, grew up at Camp Deerhorn. He is a
1979 graduate of Duke University and became an assistant director at
Deerhorn in 1981. He built a three-story scribe-fit pine log home from
scratch on a wooded Camp Deerhorn hillside where he and Susan live. He
has dedicated himself for many years to restoring and remodeling all of
the camp buildings and grounds. Over the years Donnie also
designed and implemented new and exciting programs and facilities to
Deerhorn’s traditional format. Among these are the Father/Son
camps, Deerhorn Hockey, the Skeeter (in line rink), disc golf, and
Outdoor Education . He also organizes all of the overnight trips
from camp and is eager to share his knowledge of Northwoods ecology and
lore with campers. Donnie’s lifelong experience at Deerhorn has
enabled him to problem solve and promote harmony in the Deerhorn
family.

Susan
Susan began working at Deerhorn in 1981, the year she and Donnie were
married. From her first day on she has provided a critical and special
communication link with campers and staff at camp each summer. Susan’s
specialty at Deerhorn is the management of the very efficient and busy
camp kitchen. Feeding lots of hungry boys is serious business at
camp. Menu planning is a constantly evolving process to provide
nutritious and camper-friendly meals. In addition, Susan is a
real pro at all the behind the scenes work at Deerhorn. She is a
Rhinelander native who enjoys living at Camp Deerhorn the year
round. Her favorite line in the Deerhorn Creed is the way she
lives her life here: Spreading sunshine and good cheer just for
the fun of it
. During the winter months, Susan and Donnie enjoy
x-country skiing with Je
sse and Stella on the trails around camp. Susan
is a group exercise instructor at the YMCA of the Northwoods and a
volunteer for the Senior Center and the Oneida County Youth Mentoring
program.
Patrick
Patrick also spent most of his summers as a camper and counselor at
Deerhorn. After spending the summer of 1991 in Alaska with the National
Outdoor Leadership School, he returned to Deerhorn determined to
develop the Voyager Leadership Program into not only a wilderness
expedition, but leadership training as well. This is one of Patrick's
true passions. Older campers have been treated to some excellent
outdoor education in addition to having fun on their trip. Patrick is a
1991 graduate of DePauw University and lives in Bozeman, Montana with
his wife, Amy, son, Ryder, and daughter, Rowan, when not at camp.
Amy
Amy is a native of Clinton, Indiana, and a graduate of DePauw
University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Educati
on. She spent
three years as a fourth grade teacher at St. Joseph School in Wilmette,
IL, before coming to work for camp full time. Amy worked at camp for
seven summers as the waterfront director before she and Patrick were
married in 2003. Her love for children and for camp has been evident
since her first year on staff. She has years of experience working with
children of all ages, and her ability to relate to even the oldest
campers made her a natural to help lead the Voyager Leadership Program
for three years before giving birth to their son, Ryder, in October of
2006. Patrick, Amy, Ryder, and his sister, Rowan, live in Bozeman, Montana during the
winter.
Barbara
Originally from Kansas City, Barbara graduated from the University of
Kansas in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree in Educa
tion, and in 1985 with
a Masters in Exercise Physiology with Honors. She has lived at Camp
with Bl
aine and eventually their two daughters ev
ery summer since 1986
while working in the corporate world as a Healthcare Executive. She is
passionate about community service and helping others. Barbara joined
the Deerhorn staff as a Director in 2000.
Blaine
Blaine has spent every summer of his life at Camp Deerhorn and he would
be the first to tell you that there is no better place to grow up. As a
counselor, his specialty was horseback riding. Blaine graduated from
the University of Kansas in 1983 and began a
nine-year career as an
elementary school teacher in the Wichita, Kansas school system. He
retired from teaching in 1994 to work full time with Donnie for
Deerhorn. Blaine and his wife Barbara and two daughters, Taylor and
Kiana, live in Bradenton, Florida.
