VOYAGER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
In 1990, Camp
Deerhorn offered its first Voyager Program. Boys that year enjoyed a
wilderness trip (canoeing and backpacking) in the Boundary Waters. From
the years of 1991 through 1995, Voyagers backpacked in the Porcupine
Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and canoed in the Sylvania
Wilderness Area on the border of the UP and Wisconsin. The following
year marked a change in itinerary again. Voyagers again backpacked the
Porkies and sea kayaked in the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. 1998
marked the year the backpacking section moved again. This time Voyagers
were treated to more of a wilderness expedition on the North Country
Trail, a trail that extends from eastern New York through central North
Dakota. 1996 was the year the first Voyager camper (Sid Klein) returned
to assist the program as staff. Coincidentally, this was the year the
Voyager Trip expanded into the Voyager Leadership Program. Many more
pre-trip meetings occurred to prepare them for their upcoming
adventure. These meetings included topics such as wilderness ethics,
backcountry hygiene, basic first aid, tent set-up and stove usage,
leadership discussions, and, of course, minimum-impact camping. Due to
its popularity, Camp Deerhorn offered two Voyager Leadership Programs
for the summer of 2002 and the itinerary was again altered. Voyagers
returned to the Porcupine Mountains for their hiking section. Two
groups of eight boys and two staff began at the same trail head but
hiked different paths. Both groups concluded their hiking section at
the same location. Camp Deerhorn added a fleet of sea kayaks in 2002
and the kayaking portion took place in the Apostle Islands on Lake
Superior. Capacity is limited for each trip.

FATHER/SON CAMP
What better way to
relive your childhood memories and spend quality time with your son at
the same time than Camp Deerhorn Father/Son camp? For years camp
fathers asked us when we were going to have a camp for them. In 1993,
it finally happened, and judging from the number of dads who have
visited us every year since, Father/Son camp has been a huge success.
This program became so popular that Deerhorn added another Father/Son
camp session at the end of the summer. The August session began in
1997. Activities for Father/ Son camp include water skiing, sailing,
swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, archery, riflery, tennis, soccer,
baseball, basketball, and pontoon boat cruises. Deerhorn offers one
guided fishing day with local fishermen. Over the years, this day has
been incredibly popular. The Northwood golf course, a mere 25 minute
drive from Deerhorn, is ranked as the number 3 municipal course in
America. Other highlights are fathers versus sons capture the flag,
fathers versus staff softball game, and evening campfires.
Traditionally, both these sessions reach capacity in October for the
following summer.

EXPLORER
PROGRAM
The
Explorer Program is our answer to parents' requests for more leadership
opportunities for older campers. It is a program for 14 year olds, with
priority given to those who have been campers the longest. This program
will run during the first two week (A) session and last two week (D)
session, and includes a 3 day/2 night trip, kayaking and camping in the Turtle/Flambeau Flowage...a short drive from camp.
