At Deerhorn, there is
approximately one counselor or administrator for every four campers;
many of these people are teachers or coaches and the rest are in
college. The
combination of solid dependability and enthusiasm is
unbeatable. Deerhorn counselors are carefully screened from a large
number of applicants and, in every instance, a man or woman is chosen
first because of possessing high character, judgement, moral values,
and leadership capabilities. The ability to instruct any given activity
is important, of course, but is secondary to the aforementioned
attributes. Most Deerhorn staff members are former Deerhorn campers.
Our staff represent a wide cross
section of America and have also come from Australia and France in
recent summers. We have among us graduates and undergraduates of such
colleges and universities as Arizona, Boston College, Colgate,
Colorado, Colby, DePauw, Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Marquette, Miami,
Michigan, Northwestern, Vermont and Williams.
Space limitations prevent
introducing all staff members but below is a sampling of a typical
Deerhorn staff:
|
|
Lewis Clark,
Dayton, Ohio – Lewis was a Deerhorn camper from 1996 – 2003 and
has been on our staff as an assistant counselor or counselor ever
since. Spend five minutes with Lewis, and you will find yourself
laughing. He has the knack to make anyone smile and has always
been a camper favorite. Lewis attends Denison University and was
co director of our waterfront in 2007. |
|
|
Brian McFadden,
Modesto, California – Brian joined our staff in the mid 80’s
while he played division I tennis at Vanderbilt University. Even
after college and grad school at Michigan, Brian always found a way to
visit or work for a short term at Deerhorn. He became the
international director of marketing for Gallo for almost 10 years and
still always made a Deerhorn connection. He has, in fact, been
referred to as the “glue” that binds all the recent generations of
Deerhorn together with friendship. The past two summers, Brian
has returned for a good chunk of the summer to again instruct
tennis. |
|
|
Brennan Wenck,
South Lake Tahoe, California – Brennan became a very popular
counselor in his first summer at Deerhorn in 1997. He spent three
summers instructing mountain biking and outdoor education at camp
before joining the Peace Corps and spending the next two years in
Bolivia. We were delighted to have him return each of the past
fo
ur summers. Brennan was one of the leaders of our Voyager
program last summer. |
|
|
Rocky Gust,
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan – Rocky was a camper in the late 60’s
and early 70’s. He joined the Deerhorn staff f
or the first time
in 1979 while he attended Michigan State. After changing careers
to become a teacher in the 90’s, Rocky came back to Deerhorn to b
e a
counselor and water skiing instructor during the years that he and
Julie sent their three sons to camp. They eventually purchased
property adjoining Deerhorn and Rocky is now a walk-to-work skiing
counselor. |
|
|
Hootie
Giangreco, Winnetka, Illinois – Hootie is one of the
most popular counselors in Deerhorn history. He was an
outstanding camper and has been an all star counselor winning the
coveted Stinky Robinson Knife award as a camper in 2001 and Deeley
Lyons memorial award for the top staff member in 2006. He has
been the director of special and evening events for the past two
seasons. Hootie will be graduating from Colby College in 2008. |
|
|
Dick Kinney,
Denver, Colorado – Coach Kinney has had nothing short of a
legendary career at Camp Deerhorn. 2007 was his 26th year on
staff. In his early years, Dick was the baseball instructor and,
eventually, our head counselor. He in
structed virtually every
activity at camp but has been the head of our water skiing department
for many years now. He has taught hundreds of boys to ski but,
more importantly, has been a mentor, role model, and great friend to
all of us. Dick is the director of the science department and a
three sport coach at Graland Academy in Denver. |
|
|
Pierson
Pflieger, Two Rivers, Wisconsin - Pierson joined the
Deerhorn staff in 2007 and was an immediate favorite of campers and
staff members. He split time between the canoeing and riding
departments and will be returning to camp in 2008 as a full time
rider. Pierson is a natural teacher with incredible
patience. He at
tends Concordia University where he is pursuing a
degree in secondary education. |
|
|
Eric Timm,
St. Louis, Missouri – Eric graduated from Butler University in
2007. He has been a very popular and hard working counselor each
of the past three seasons. Eric has been versatile, instructing
many of
our activities and has been a huge help assisting in many pre
camp and post camp projects. Campers are naturally drawn to him
because of his kindness and ability to relate well to them. He
now works full time in Atlanta but we hope we can hire him back if he
chooses to go to graduate school. |
